  • What does an MoT test check?

As a general guide the image opposite shows the items an MoT test looks at to ensure that they meet the minimum legal safety requirements

Please note that an MoT test does not cover the condition of the Engine, Clutch or Gearbox, and it doesn't replace the need for a regular service as it does not check its general mechanical condition.

  • Why do I need an MoT?

Having a valid MoT on your vehicle is a legal requirement and you must get an MoT for your vehicle by either:

    • the third anniversary of its registration
    • the anniversary of its last MOT, if it’s over 3 years old

If you do not have a valid MoT you can be fined up to £1,000
